Bios boot from PCI-E?

If I have a PCI-E SATA card, do I need to install drivers for this to work with my machine, or can I just set the BIOS to boot from a drive connected to a card.

Also, have any of you ever seen a PCI-Ex16 sata card? Would this be faster?
