Hey,

I'm interested in purchasing a 4850 card and I have 2 options:

1) A Palit for 160$
2) HIS ICQ$ turbo dual slot cooler for 209$

Is the dual slot cooler worth the extra money since the 4850 runs hot??

You could get an Asus HD 4850 for $153 and add a $39 cooler, if you prefer. You even get a free game with this combination.

Or get a MSI HD 4850 with improved cooling for $165+$9 shipping:

For $209, you'd better be looking at 4870's IMO. The price range get too close to that card :P

Anyway, yeah... Getting an after market cooler sounds more like a cheaper play in most cases. If you don't know how to mod the video card, think about getting the 4870 instead.

That's the only one i could find on the Eggy store xP

I'll ask the obvious question: Why do you only have two options?

If those really are your *only* two choices then I wouldn't pay an extra $50 for a better cooler. That's just a rip.

Dont bother with the extra cooler. Just up the fan speed on a standard 4850 and it idles at a comfortable 43C, with fair noise levels.

well I'm in Canada now and I want to buy at the NCIX store near my house and palit is the cheapest card they have, they also have other brands but they are more expensive and I rather not mod my card so I don't want to buy an after market cooler

If you're in Canada and want to buy from NCIX, I recommend the following:

I purchased one for my 4850 and it now idles at 40 C. I'm not a gamer, so I can't give you load temps.

if this is the palit 4850 you're talking about: http://ncix.com/products/index.php [...] dia%20Inc. then it is a dual slot cooler anyway.

OK, well in that case the reference Palit card should be fine. You can always increase the fan speed with RivaTuner if you're worried about the card getting too hot. If the 4850 cooler is anything like the 8800GT cooler you should be able to set it at ~45% and still hear yourself think.
