Hello GPU experts,

I recently played Assassins Creed on my friends Xbox and I would like to continue in the privacy of my underwear. What is the cheapest card I can get to play it maxed out?

I have e2140 @ 3.2GHz, 2GB RAM @ 800MHz (1:1)...I quit gaming after I bought and sold the 2900 tragedy — It was reminiscent of my first stock trade. But my wounds have healed, and I'm back now after playing Ass. Creed. And seeing spore (that game looks really fun).

Thank you for your advice, GPU experts. :hello:

I would get the HD 4850 that would compliment so nicely the rest of your PC, but the absolute cheapest would be the HD 3870 depending on your resolution.

Benchmark for Assassin's Creed:

Go down the list and see what's the minimum fps you require.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I have a native 1680x1050, and I need at least 2xAA!

But wouldn't the 3870 be just like buying the 2900 again? That card failed me so miserably.

Well, being fair here, that game came out being a DX10 tittle, so a 9800GTX+ can handle it pretty well too. If you patch it to be a DX10.1 game, well then u'd have to go the ATi road indeed XD

Also, a 8800GT can handle it me thinks till 1680x1050 ish res with no/minor problems.

Esop!

The HD 3870 addressed most of the issues of the HD 2900XT except the AA, you asked for the cheapest card. If you want a card that can run it properly, look for the HD 4850 ($160-180) or the HD 4870 ($260-280), they are the absolute best you can get right now for their price range and unlike the HD 2900 series, these actually have a VERY easy time handling AA.

Okay, thanks guys. I didn't want to buy a new card, was hoping to get used. But maybe that would be best...do you think the 4850x2 is coming out soon? That should drop the price a bit right?

Hey Yuka → Before you recommended the 8800GT, did you catch my post with my resolution and AA prerequisite?

cheapest 3850 would do. but i would go with a 4850.

Well, if it's only 2xaa, like you've mentioned, then the fps values should be at almost exactly where they are. 8800gt does handle aa decently, 3850/70 handles it worse, 4850/70 better.

If you do get the HD 4850 (It's only like $30-40 more than an 8800GT), you're going to want to put more than 2x AA, that's for sure.

HD4850 is sufficient for your resolution and AA needs

Yeppers, and on that res should be able to hold on 2xMSAA @30FPS at least, wich is the desirable minimum IMO.

The 3870 would actually be a great card for AC. If you don't install the 1.1 patch then you get free AA pretty much with DX 10.1. I don't see any difference running the game with AA and without AA in dx10 because of that .1 that they decided to take out about 1-2 weeks after it was leaked that AC supported it.
