Hey guys,

Been wondering this for a little while, checked out numerous stickies on here and other sites as well as googling, but cannot seem to find a definative answer regarding this question..

Basically, I have a DFI X48 T2RS and a Q6600, currently running at 3.4ghz and 1.45v, been running like this for nearly a year i guess.. the CPU will literally not overclock a dot past 3.4, even increasing VCore to 1.5 won't let me go any higher.. and I did spend about an hour going from 3.4 up in stages..

The DFI board is pretty excellently kitted out for O/Cing, in terms of settings that is, and of course has NB voltage settings, However I haven't got a clue as to when to raise NB and in what respect I should try using it?

My logic says to raise FSB and VCore, and when you start hitting errors with the FSB you have and the MAXIMUM VCore your willing to use (probably 1.45 for me) then you can start increasing the NB, If all raising the NB does is allow to lower the VCore the same results then I'm not too bothered.

I've also read that the SB doesn't do anything or O/C'ing, is that correct?

Can someone give me a better handle on what the NB does and if O'Cing it actually makes a difference?

If anyone has any links or info that are useful i'd appreciate it.

Alex.

Your "logic" about NB voltages is pretty spot on.

NB voltage is typically for running at high FSB's. I assume you have something like a 400fsb?

If so you shouldnt need it but it wouldnt hurt to mess with it.

SB voltage doesnt help overclocking, but i have found that it will help stability if the SB doesnt want to run at spec voltage.

I like questions like this, remindes me how overclocking is really an art.

Exactly what is your problem ? E.X. does it post?

What are your settings (multiplier, FSB, etc)?

Hey,

Thanks for getting back to me!

Currently i'm at 425fsb x 8mp = 3400 with my RAM in a 1:1 ratio

I can get the system to post at 3.6, I think even 3.7 (been a few weeks since I had time to try it all out) but fails prime, crashes and BSOD's.

I'm going to try playing with NB settings and will see how it reacts, I am hoping to get the system stable at 3.7-3.8, would make me content!

hmmm...

what is your memory voltage? Is it linked or unlinked to the FSB?

What memory are you using?

Thise sounds like a memory problem to me.

excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what that means :-S

I use Patriot Extreme DDR800, 2x2gb and I remember when playing with it originally it could pass memtest at 1066

If it means when I increase my FSB does my memory voltage increase, then no I adjust that manually..

It's currently at 2.2v

Couldn't get the system stable at 3.6ghz, wen't to 1.5v CPU, 1.6v NB and 2.3v Ram and almost instant failure with Prime.

Tested out 3.5ghz (438x8) with about 1.46-47 CPU, 1.5NB and 2.2 ram and 5min fail with prime

Any ideas on how to overcome these probs?

can you tell me what CPU VTT might refer to on the board?

Ingore that Q about CPU VTT... i understand what it is!

OK here is your problem....

Your memory is speced at 800mhz. You have a 1:1 ratio. There for, for every 1 mhz you increase your FSB you increase your memory clock 1mhz except that is doubled because it is ddr(double data rate)

So if you have 300 fsb your ram runs at 600 mhz, wich is in spec. When you increase it to 435 fsb you have your ram at 870mhz.

That is quite an overclock for ram to handle.

So you need to unlink your ram speed to the FSB. There should be a setting somewhere to do this.

This makes the FSB have no influence on the ram speed.

You really think it's my ram that's causing the problem?

i can unlock it and run it at a lower mhz which takes me out of 1:1 sync

I'll give it a whirl and see where we end up!

Thanks!

Yeah dude, its most definetly your ram.
