i just recently bought my first ATI card (Radeon 4850). however, i'm confused about the drivers. both asus and catalyst include display drivers. do i need both? (i assume not). also, does anyone know if the ASUS EAH4850 has the overheating/fan issue?

I have a 4870 and I would not use the drivers on the CD. Just go to ATI.com and download the lastest driver there. Its 8.8. Just download the CCC file. So you get all the drivers and setting. about the fan thing. I card came with a fan speed of 16%. So I followed the guides for the hotfix and bumped it up to 40% and it keeps it real cool. load doesnt go over 60c.

No, you should not install both drivers sets.
Go Here and download the latest 8.8 drivers (not the outdated hotfix drivers) for your OS.
Does your ASUS card have standard cooling?
If so, you should apply the fan speed fix just to be sure.
If yours has the upgraded cooler, it should be OK.

the eah4850 comes with the smart doctor program . my fan speed was set to manual at 60% . you can adjust your fan settings . i have the over heat protestion enabled as well . when it gets too hot it changes the fan to 100% . all the other auto settings dont seem to work for me .
