Hi Guys,

New to the forum, and looking for a bit of advice.

I need to choose between the following 2 cards

XFX GeForce 8800 GT 1Gb

Asus EN8800GTS TOP/HTDP/512MB

The GTS rates about 10% faster when both cards are fitted with 512Mb but will the 1Gb on the GT give me an advantage.

link to the comparison below

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to the forums mate :)

I would go for The second option because 8800GTS 512 is faster than 8800GT 1GB,because the extra memory wont help much
What resolution do u play at?

Thanks for the welcome. :)

I know that the 512Mb vs 256Mb versions of cards run significantly better

I have been out of the loop on hardware for a while but just bought some bits off a mate

My screen is 1600x1200 native so that would be the ideal

Looking to run Crysis/World in Conflict and any other decent games as they launch.

The rest of the hardware I have bought is as follows

Asus P5B Premium Mobo
Core2 E6600 CPU
Zalman CNPS 8700 CPU Cooler
4GB DDR2 Ram
Antec P180 Case
Antec Neopower 480 modular PSU

I agree with Maziar on the 8800GTS 512

At your resolution, the extra 512Mb of GPU memory will be wasted.
Go with the faster 8800GTS 512.

OK, I think I am sold on the GTS then.

One more question, what about the ATI Radeon 4850 it seems to either be just above or just below the 8800 GTS on all the comparisons?

Are there any other benefits to Nvidia or ATi?

Cheers.

Concerning the 4850 vs 8800GTS, the 4850 is certainly a bit more powerful. Except in the few games where all ATI cards sh*t out.. (like crysis) As far as I have seen, usually do to poor optimization, and not the card tech.

Also, most would agree ATI cards have a better record with video play-back, home entertainment stuff.. but thats somewhat opinionated

If you can get a 4850 for ~ the same price as the 8800GTS, I'd say go for it.

^agree
the 4850 would certainly be a smarter choice...

Now that it rings on my mind...

Do you have a Cross Fire, SLi, or single PCIe x16 motherboard?

If you have a single PCIe x16 or even more, Cross Fire, yeah, i kinda change my +1 to the 4850. Not that there is a HUGE difference, but the 4850 seems to have a bigger life span.

If those 2 are your ONLY available choice, then get the GTS.

Esop!

i'll Second the 4850 :) either that or the 8800 GTS which can be found ridiculously cheap, but I'd bite the bullet add a little more cashiola and bump your choice to a 4850.:)

Cheers guys. I can pick up an HD 4850 for a little less than the nvidia 8800 GTS so will go with that one.

Thanks for the help.
