Hi,
I was thinking of upgrading my mother board and CPU, but I've decided to wait for a sale. In the interim, I'm wanting to upgrade my RAM. Currently, I have 2X512MB PC4200 at 533MHz. I am wanting to get either 2 GB or 4 GB of PC6400 (800MHz) RAM. Here are my questions. 1) The motherboard has a maximum speed of RAM DDR2 at 533MHz, but lists the 800MHz as compatible. I know that it will only operate at the lower speed, but is there any possibility I could damage the chips operating them at a slower speed (when I upgrade, the new MB is compatible with PC6400). 2) Should I go with 2 GB or 4 GB, as in would there be a significant advantage over one capacity than the other? I'm aware most 32-bit OS's only address around 3.5GB, but I do use 64-bit occasionally.

Also, what in the way of performance does the latency play a part? The lower 4 is more expensive than the 5. What gains in overall system gains do you get for the lower latency?

I am in the same transition myself (first RAM, then other parts...). My current MB supports DDR2 533 Mhz up to a total of 4GB.
I was allready made my move and i bought 2x2GB A-Data@800Mhz and they work fine (except the speed of course :) ).
But i suggest you to look carefuly at the amount of memory supported by your curent MB (you don't want to buy a stick of 2Gb and then realise that your MB can only support 1 Gb per slot). And maybe you want to plan what MB you will buy next and watch out that the memory must be compatible with that one too.
Good luck !

Running them slower will not hurt anything.

Thanks for the responses. I'll go ahead and get the 800MHz RAM. I'll probably get 2 2GB kits, for a total of 4GB. I know that the compatibility is better for 1GB modules. The mother board I plan on purchasing in the future has 4 slots, and max. RAM is 8GB, so that should work well.
