How can i get my hard drive from a crashed Sony laptop running vista to be read using a usb external hard drive case, it wants me to format it, but i need the data off of it.

Don't format it, see if you can run chkdsk /f on it. Just remember, if it crashed, you may not be able to access your data.

I can not. Is there any trick to allow yourself to read some of the data on the disk?

Remove the hard drive. Put it into a portable USB case. Plug into another computer.

I've already tried to put it into a usb case, it tells me to format it, it won't read it. Obviously i'm not going to format it, i need to read it somehow, any ideas on how to read it and get around not formatting it first (which i would not do)

I've not used MBRWizard to repair an MBR, but you may want to look at it.
