I have looked everywhere and have not found a clear answer to this question. I currently have a GA-EP45-UD3P and an Antec twelve case. When trying to connect the motherboard's HD audio Pins to the case. I ran into this problem

HD Audio pin layout:

MB_______________ Antec case
1= MIC2_L_________ 1 = MIC2 L
2= GND____________ 2 = AGND
3= MIC2_R_________ 3 = MIC 2 R
4= -ACZ_DET_____ 4 = AVCC
5= LINE2_R_______ 5 = FRO-R
6= GND__________ 6 = MIC2_JD
7= FAUDIO_JD____ 7 = F_IO_SEN

8= NO PIN_________ 8 = Key (no pin)
(9= LINE2_L______ 9 = FRO-L
10= GND_________ 10 = Line2_JD

First question.
What do these abreviations stand for?

Second question
Assuming that these two pin lay outs don't match up, is there something I can purchase so I do not have to cut the cables?

Third question
What will happen if I just plug this thing in, will it destroy the sound card on the motherboard since i"m plugging Line2 in to a ground?

Thank you in advance for all of your help!

Most cases come with a STANDARD AC97 connection and a STANDARD HD-Audio connection on the same cable. Look at your cable ends and see what they say. They should already be grouped together, unless Antec doesn't know what it's doing.

The Gigabyte motherboard can use either AC97 or HD-Audio connectors, the mode should be selectable in BIOS.

I don't think I understand what you just said. The connectors are as listed above. I understand that one cable can do both HD and standard however, I am interested in the HD only and the pins do not match up.

It just seems to me that the motherboard manufacturer and the case manufacturer have different abbreviations for the same thing and it should work without a problem.(I just ran into the same thing with a Gigabyte board and an Antec300 case, I just used the AC/97 Audio because the connectors on the front don't really add any benefit either way, and the person I am building it for doesn't care in any way.

Maybe I am not understanding something. Is the HD audio and the AC/97 essentially the same quality except for the ability to use the front jacks on the case? I'm pretty sure it isn't and I really would like to use the HD audio, not the AC/97. But if they are essentially the same when using a high-end speaker setup, please let me know. Thanks

They're using the same MOBO sound chip, & running through the same MOBO codec, so I'm pretty sure they are pretty much the same quality - at least , although Intel claims a lot of difference, I doubt one could really 'hear' any; can't tell for sure, 'cause I clipped off the '97 plug from my cosmos first thing, just for 'tidy'... The difference in pinning than you posted is just a difference in nomenclature for the pins.

Here's a general explanation:

Here's the Intel blurb:

And the spec:

Not to hijack your thread, but the NZXT Tempest case I'm using this board in has the same issue - the front panel audio uses pin 6 for FSENSE1 and pin 10 for FSENSE2, where the mobo merely grounds them. I've left Gigabyte and NZXT both emails asking for clarifications, so far zilch back.

Anyone think anything will smoke if I just plug in the cable?

Did Gigabyte ever respond?
