Motherboard and CPU temperature

Hi,

I'd like to know how motherboard reports the CPU temperature. For example, where is the temperature sensor placed?
I am running A64 5000+ BE @ 3.2GHz (1.4v). Now I've read that (some) Brisbanes have faulty (wrongly calibrated?) temperature sensors, so I've been using +15°C offset in Core Temp. This way the core temps reach max. 40°C under heavy stress.

Now my MB reports CPU temps as high as 57°C. I am beginning to doubt this reading as the heatsink (Noctua NH-U12P with 2x NF-P12, AS5) gets only semi-warm. I've seated enough heatsinks to "master" the process, so I don't believe that could be the issue either. Could it simly be that the motherboard cpu temp reading is way off?

Oh and my board is M2N-SLI Deluxe.

Thanks for you reply. AMD Overdrive reports "cannot detect AMD 7-series chipset" and refuses to start. Everest reports the same temperatures as mentioned above, except for the core temps, which are reported without the offset (ie. 9°C when idle)
