Sata connection location and direction

can anyone tell me why some manufactures put SATA connetion on the side of their motherboards facing to the side and not on the top of the motherbaords facing up?

To avoid interference with long cards. That way, you can use long video cards and still be able to use those SATA ports.

Particularly good for large cases where the SATA cable can't reach over the card. Smaller cases, does not matter.
