Seeking some guidance on building a gaming rig. I have fallen behind with the latest technologies and best components out there. With a budget of £700, I am carefully considering my options before buying and where else to get expert opinions:-)
So, I will be using my system for gaming and my current set-up is as follows:
Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo
X2 4400+
Radeon 1950 Pro
2 x 36g Raptor Raid 0
4 x 512mb Corsair memory.
win Xp 64 bit
I want a direct x 10.1 compatible system that can run Crysis with most of the eye candy turned-on and, in the future, I want to be a able to run Crossfire / SLI. I have done a little research, first combination:
AMD Phenom Quad 9950 2.6GHz
Radeon 4870 (upgrade to crossfire in the future)
Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 AMD 790FX
OCZ 4GB PC2-8500 Platinum (2x2GB)
Vista 64 Bit
I will be keeping my 2 x raptors running Raid0
As mentioned, the Q6600 would probably be faster. You also won't be able to CF the 4870 on that 790SLI motherboard. Those are the two big problems. Other problems include the lack of PSU, and the tiny amount of harddrive space. If you are building a new machine, spend the ~£50-£70 and get a good new PSU. You'll have the power to run a modern machine, it will have a higher efficiency, and you won't have to mess with adapters. If you can get by on 72 unformatted gigs, more power to you. A cheap ~300GB harddrive shouldn't be much more then £50. (converted the price, not sure how being across the pond effects prices.)
It terms of the limited amount of disk space, I only have 2-4 games installed at anyone time, moreover, I have a 200gb hard drive that I would run use the other Sata connection. My favourite / most played games would be installed on the Raptor and the not so hot games on the 200gb hard drive.
In relation to the CPU, I have read that Intel is currently the best but I want to be able to run dual video cards and the cheapest option, from what I saw, was the AMD route mentioned in my very first post. Also, with everyone raving about the price / performance ratio of the 4870, I could not find anything that compared in terms of p / p ratio.
I dont mind whether it is Intel / AMD, I just want the best possible with my very limited budget of £700. Only for CPU. Graphics Card, Mobo and memory. I have already got a PSU and Hard Drive.
Hang on a second, I need to wipe the egg from my face. All I saw was 790, its a wonder I didn't complain about DDR3...
The PCP&C PSU should be fine, no worries there. You can run the 4870 on the P35/45, no worries there either. I'm not sure which costs less, the Q6600 or the 9950. If the 9950 is cheaper over there, then get that. Seeing as the dollar is so weak, are you really having issues getting under £700?
I read too fast the first time around and thought you were going to try to play Crysis maxed with the 4400+ and ATI 1950, lol. I need to practice my reading comprehension.
I think that the new system will be able to run Crysis on all High settings with a few settings on Very high. I have a X2 5000+ (2.6ghz) and an Nvidia 9600GT and get nearly playable framerates on the demo on all High. Since the 4870 kicks the 9600's butt and the processor can't be any worse than mine even if it's not quad optimized, I say go for it!

So, just to clarify, can you please list the items / build you are recomending? This way, I am able to price it over here in the UK.
What you spec'd out is fine. I don't live over there, so you'll need to find out if the 9950 + mobo is cheaper then the q6600 + mobo. They use the same ram, so that doesn't matter. The 4870 is the best price/performance card out right now, unless you can't spend that much. Then get its little brother and be happy with that. (4850) PCP&C 750W, Quad core whatever, 4GBs, and the 4870 is quite the system. The only question is which quad core is cheaper where you live.
