I'm not sure I understand the appeal of a quad core for gaming. I'd go with the e8500. It's about the same price and will give you better results (3.16Ghz stock)

grieve the problem is that i have an intel original board.. so i don't know how much it can help with overclocking the quad.. the thing is that i'm not living in the US and there are no aftermarket motherboards here.. plus i dont know to what clockspeed i can get the Q6600 without raising the temps or voltage.. i dont want to get any cooler so as not to pay more.. do you understand ?

^Yes. If your not sure on how high you can overclock, I say just go for a E8400.

But a P35 Should be able to overclock pretty high. Even though its not a after market motherboard, it still has a p35 northbridge :D

it would be most cost effective to get the E8400. the price difference has gotten smaller over the past little while, i don't think $20 is worth a 160Mhz clock speed increase. the E8400 will overclock to 4Ghz if you try hard enough :D

I ordered almost the same system 4-weeks ago. I am still waiting but it will come as above except P45 MB (ASUS P5Q) and overclocked at 2.8 GHZ. I think we can game just fine with this setup. The quad should provide some future proofing when more apps and games come optimized for them. As for upgrades, I dont know if these MB's will allow us to drop in a Nehalem I7 down the road but Wolfdales would be a good last upgrade.

which seagate hdd are those 8, 16 or 32mb cache? No matter which you could save money gettting 1 500gb drive or the wd 640gb drive. assuming price differences are similar where you are. in UW wd 640 gb is only $85. Those drives you chose range from $55 to $80 each depending on cache size.

+1 to the dual core

good choice on the 4850

the HDDs are 16mb.. 60$ each.. so 120$ both.. but i think i can get better performance from 2 250GB in RAID0, than 1 500GB.. dont you think ?
yea i am most happy with my 4850 hehe
but arent games more bound to using multitasking ? ie, physics, rendering, AA, all of that.. and arent core 2 quads better at it ? i was going for the E8500 at first, but then the salesman told me to go with the Q6600.. now i'm really lost :p lol

Dont ever believe what a sales person tells you. Ewww...

95% Of the people on the Tomshardware forums know more about tech then some sales person sorry to say. And for gaming right now duals are better. I say go for a e8400. As for the harddrives, raid 0 will give you better loading times and such, but sit back and think about if its really worth it. I mean its not like your always reading and writing to your harddrive is it?

How' bout 4 GB of RAM - 2x2GB sets are cheap now. Get one with timings of 4-4-4-x or something like that.

Agreed on the dual core. I'd get the 640 GB hard drive as suggested too.

yes huron, i have 2 x 2GB of ram.. at 4-4-4-15..
i'm getting one 250GB.. and was thinking of upgrading with another 250 and put them in RAID 0.. and i dont remember who but someone on tomshardware told me that C2D are better for action and single player games, and C2Q are slightly better for strategy games.. is that true ?
so your advice is to go with the E8400 ? how much do u think i can overclock it without having to increase the cooling ?

personally. 640gb wd for $85 saves you money (altough in the short run costs a little more) and performance wise I really don't think you'll be missing out. i don't know of a better deal price per gb.

as far as dual vs. quad. different games do a better job of taking advantage of a multi-threaded cpu. they key is we are talking about a 1k build. so we can't compare dual core vs quad core at same clock speed. what we have to compare is same price. and getting the higher speed on the dual core with still a good ability to overclock should in most instances give you better gaming performance overall. Way better in games that don't take advantage of muti-core. and in games that do you will still be fast enough to probably not see any issues with dual core.

as far as overclocking i defer to someone that knows more than me.

i know bdollar.. but we dont have WD here.. so my only choice is SeaGate or hitachi.. and i went with seagate :)
for the same build, is the Q6600 or the E8400 better ?

i already gave my opinion two posts up. :) i don't think a fast dual core is going to bottle neck you even in games that take advantage of mutiple cores. and there are so many games that don't or don't effectively that the faster dual will be advantageous in all of those.

I'm currently using the e8400 and have it at 3.9GHz pretty easily. When I bought it, it was $200 and the e8500 was $270. Since they've slipped to $160 and $180, I think I'd go with the e8500, but that's just personal preference. Either way, spending that much on a quad core will give you inferior performance on games. (I know... preaching to the choir here)
