I have just started building systems for a small profit for friends and i currently have a request for a £500 pc that can game reasonably. it will be running a 22" screen (included in £500) and i will most likely be using an ATI 4670 GPU however i need an intel processor that will keep up with it and not waste the performance. how fast a processor do i need (open to minor overclocking) currently looking at a intel e2200 or e2220 £50 and £60 respectively stock or with a small OC are these ok

Thanks
Tom

^+1 Most can get to 3.2ghz, some can get as far as 3.6. Edit: I'm not sure what kind of overclocking options the asus board has.

Get the E5200, its %52.64 on dabs and its way better than the e2x00, its 45nm and will easierly OC to just over 3ghz on stock voltage and coolers

specs of board here only 65nm unfortunately would not use if wasn't for the fact i just have it

then the e2160 is a good bet for cheap OCing (mine is currently quite happy at 3 ghz stable.)

Agreed, it is better, but unfortunately the board only supports 65nm. There may be some kind of bios update, but I can't find it.

how much speed will it need to play games at 1680 x 1080 res with the ati 4670 will it need 3+ or will 2.2-2.6 ish work ok

I would think once it gets to around 2.4 at that resolution the graphics card will limit it more than the CPU

You'd probably only need 2.5 - 2.6ghz.
