Yeah... you wouldn't be able to use SLI on a crossfire board... at all. Nvidia has made sure to keep their SLI technology as proprietary so only their certified boards can make use of it.

Ati right now has the better offerings, I would suggest this card:

SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102770

EDIT: And if you want my opinion, neither company is on your side since they both want your money, but if I had to pick a 'dark side' based on the recent events (mid 2007 until now), I'd say the true 'dark side' is nvidia.

If you are only going to use 1 video card, then buy the best card you can afford.

A 4870x2 = $550
A gtx280 = $400

And two 4870 in xfire = $520 ($260 each)

Go with a Radeon 4850. You can only run SLi on non certified boards with older hacked drivers. The Radeon 4850 is faster than the 8800GT (now the 9800GT) and you add another 4850 for crossfire performance latter.

That card is a very good card for the money! Asus also includes a control panel software so you can control the fan speed and such! Its the best card for the money currently bar none!

My goodness. It doesn't matter if your Mobo is SLI or Xfire if your running one card. Only when you run more than one card does SLI or Xfire matter.

The 4850 is a great card and if that's all you can spend, go for it. I'd look at the most you can spend for one card.
