How many people have an HD station that broadcast the same show in HD and
SD. For example WBAL 11 Baltimore broadcasts HD (or HD upconverted from SD)
on 11-1 and SD on 11-2. I really don't see any reason for the SD subchannel
as all ATSC boxes do HD and have display options for 4:3 sets.

Also, it eats into the 19.4 where another station (WCAU for example) gives
it all to the 1080i.

I can see why the PBS stations would do this (1080i plus 480i) because
they're symalcasting the regular network with the HD network. But the extra
SD channel just seems like a waste (unless the DTV station comes in better
than the analog).

Digital TV has the 19.38 'bandwidth' for transmitting
any Digital 'Information' that fits within the limit....

Be it 1 HD Program, 1 HD & 1 SD Program or 6 SD Programs....

Time of Day, Local Info of interest (Weather, News, Sports),
or Local Stations desire will fill that Bandwidth
in the Future When Local Stations get ALL their
Digital Control Room Equipment purchased &
installed.. Then good multicasting will prosper...

Be aware that 720p HD takes a little more Processing
horsepower And less bandwidth than 1080i HD.

Stations like FOX-HD, ESPN-HD, & ABC-HD have that
'extra' 720p bandwidth will have a need for less
Digital/HD Signal compression...

Only more time will lead to SD Programming developing...

My point was redundant programming.

This actually answers my question as to why my STB freezes and restarts with
ABC HD programming. I have the Sylvania box and the video processor must be
maxing out. Now I wish they'd do widescreen SD instead of the lame ABC News
Now. :-(

Oh well, the NTSC has a nice decoder and 1080 looks as sharp as the best
digital computer pics. ;-)

WKYC-TV 3 in Cleveland does. They broadcast three signals on their digital
channel.

1. the HDTV channel in 16:9 widescreen.

2. The SD channel, showing the same thing as the HDTV channel, except in 4:3

3. A 24 hour weather radar, in 4:3 format.
