My Palm was stolen on a business trip. I generally like Palms but
I'm not afraid to program and I'm considering a handheld that can
run Linux. (I understand a lot of the Ipaqs can, for example.) But
my budget is $150 firm, and I don't expect to have a lot of time to
fiddle for the next few months (new baby due shortly).
I want good battery life, and a grayscale screen is fine. Obsolete
is fine, too. Just so long as Linux runs well on it. Is there anything
out there that can fit my anemic budget?

I have something called "LinuxDA" (demo) running on a PalmIIIxe.
Go to www.linuxda.com and see what you think.
I'm not sure I will continue on this path, but it's an option.

More of a toy than a real system. The Dragonball processor in
older Palms doesn't have a Memory Management Unit so memory
protection is essentially not feasible. The hardware isn't at all
Unix-friendly and it's basically not a good idea. With a bit more
power and RAM something can perhaps be done, though.

House Republicans are changing the rules so that a member indicted
by a state prosecutor can remain in a leadership position, to
protect Tom Delay. Of course, that rule was instituted in 1993 to
target Dan Rostenkowski, a Democrat...

I have two Compaq iPAQ units with all kinds of accessories that
have both run Linux since late 2000 (never seen a day of WindowsCE or
PocketPC on these devices).
I might be willing to part with them, if you're interested.

I don't know what they go for (new or used), but the Sharp Zaurus
runs Linux natively...

Even on eBay they go past $150, sadly. Plus the battery life isn't
stellar with those.

I received your reply, I've just been extremely busy. The
turnover to a new year is always a flurry of extreme activity for the
first week or two.
