Hello,
Right now I have a 16" - 17" CRT monitor and I am finding it too small now for games etc. Its also quite dull in games. I've had it for years and years so its had a good run. Anyway I'm unsure what to replace it with. I'm looking at a 22" LCD at the moment. In the shops the HP monitors seems to have much better contrast then the other brands to me. Are there any 22" monitors that anyone can recommend? I don't really want to spend over £200 unless the monitor is really worth it.

I have a 8800 GTS (G92) now so would 1680x1050 be the best resolution for a 22"? Is 1680x1050 a widely supported? I mean will I have any issues with that resolution with games? Also is LCD blur and issue with monitors like it is with LCD TVs?

A 22" widescreen LCD would be a smart choice. That's the sweet spot these days - most pixels for the dollar (or pound, etc).

1680x1050 is well supported and it will be even better supported in the future. Most monitors you can buy these days work best at this resolution and game makers know it.

An 8800GTS G92 should handle 1680x1050 very well.

Make sure you get a monitor with 2ms or 5ms response time. That should avoid blur issues.

Definitely get the monitor that looks best to you in store. However, keep in mind that settings can be adjusted a lot, and some monitor that looks horrible in store may be perfect for you once you're allowed to fix the colors/brightness/contrast, etc.

HP makes good monitors, in general. So does Samsung. LG and Acer also have good models, usually at lower prices but with fewer features.

Here's a chart: Crysis, at 1680x1050, on a 8800GTS G92, 30 fps on Vista DX10, High quality, 0xAA/0xAF.
Reduce the resolution to 1440x900 and you'll get 37.3 fps. Reduce it to 1280x1024 and you'll get even more.

In Quake Wars you'll get 79 fps. Mind you, the monitor will most likely show only 60 fps (if it has a refresh rate of 60Hz, like most LCDs at that resolution).

Ok thanks for the fast response. People say the new Samsungs have bad blacklight bleed so I think I will avoid those. I thought that backlight bleed was an issue with large screen LCDs but not small ones.

I want this new monitor as Warhammer Online is out soon and want to play it on a 22".

Looking at a LG L226WTQ-SF TFT Monitor. Its got great reviews apart from the grey scale. Because it is is a TFT monitor does that mean the colours will invert when looking at it on an angle?

You should go to some brick-and-mortar (BestBuy, etc.) and see how each monitor feels.

I have an LG and a Samsung and I can tell you both look bad from an angle. That's true for all the cheaper monitors. The S-PVA monitors don't have this problem, but they cost a lot and tend to be less suitable for games too.
