To start off I have a dell dimension 5100 running windows XP and is about 3.5 years old.

 

The other day I restarted my computer and it got to the Dell splash screen and at approx 95% of the way through the status bar it froze and my computer started beeping continuously until I powered it down.

 

(with my roommates help)
Powered it up went into bios and started it from there and it worked. We restarted it to make sure it would work normally on boot up and it did.

 

My question is what could cause this problem and now I am afraid to turn off my computer in fear it won't boot up lol.
