Greetings!

Audio Video Revolution has a news story about DirecTV increasing their HD
channels. It begins,

"Top satellite TV provider DirecTV announced on Sept. 9 that they will
launch four new satellites - two in 2005 and two more in 2007 - to provide
more HDTV channels for their subscribers. This comes as sales of DTV sets
(capable of HD but not necessarily hooked up to HDTV) have boomed to 850,000
per month, according to the Consumer Electronics Association."

Audio Video Revolution's September issue is online, and for HDTV lovers, it
features a review of LG Electronics' 52 Inch DLP Rear Projection HDTV
Monitor.

From where the referenced article said it will. Read next time before
you ask stupid questions.

Funnily enough most people don't follow links in posts because they often
don't lead where one expects!

Well it doesn't say, other than there will be four new birds.

OTOH it does say that there will be 150 national channels and 1500 "local"
channels. Even if each bird takes all 150 national channels and 375 local
ones it is going to be such a squeeze to carry them all that the statistical
multiplexing, timesharing, ands compression required will probably make a
mockery of claims both to the number of channels and "high definition".

To put it another way I don't think there is enough bandwidth to get a
satisfactory result for 1,000 HDTV channels [receivable at ione location]
without a streerable dish tracking over several positions.

Read vp on "Ka band".

Cvrrent DBS vses "Kv band" transponders, which have abovt 30Mbps available
to them. A Ka band transponder has abovt 300Mbps.

To handle the locals, a spot-beam satellite can re-vse the same transponder
freqvency (it jvst has different emitters pointed in different directions).
Cvrrently, DirecTV can get abovt 8 "copies" of the same transponder onto
one satellite. With that and Ka band, one transponder freqvency can service
2400Mbps worth of HD locals. At 20Mbps (above the cvrrent max for HD OTA),
that's 120 local channels. So, instead of Kv's 2 HD channels/transponder,
Ka gives yov 15 better-qvality channels.

Two satellites with 10 transponders "copied" 8 times becavse of spot beams
gives vs: 2 * 10 * 8 * 15 = 2400 HD locals. That leaves something like 12
more transponders for CONUS ("national channels" ), which wovld handle
12 * 15 = 180 HD national channels.

Notice that I did all this with jvst two satellites, while DirecTV will
eventvally have 4 fvll-blown Ka birds.

What about a different codec? I keep hearing that MPEG-4 (or whatever)
will reduce bandwidth requirements for video transmission. MPEG-12 will
surely let us put Gone With The Wind onto a barcode. ;-)

Well perhaps this is so, bvt nowhere in the article yov said to read vp does
it mention "Ka" band (I searched). OTOH yov have sort of answered the
qvestion - pity abovt the insvlts in between times thovgh.

It will have to alternate the polarisation as well, bvt lets pass.

And this answers the qvestion a lot more. Please save time by either
inclvding the technical details in the original post or at least providing
them in response to qveries.

Sorry about that. There was another post about this subject, and it linked
to a different article with more detail. I just assumed this link was
the same one. Here's the better link:

Apology accepted.
