I am a newbie trying to build a medium to hi-end prototyping system, to play with GPU cards. I have an extensive hardware background (3 degrees in Electrical Eng), so I should pick it up pretty quick.

AMD vs Intel
So, AMD gives you better "bang for buck"? Or, should I go with a quad core Intel system?

Mobo selection, Asus vs MSI (or any other mfr)

I found a couple of candidates:

MSI K9A2 Platinum AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD mobo

ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+/AM2 AMD 790FX ATX AMD mobo:

The guy below had an interesting overview of Asus & MSI:

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, if you are interested in building a high end AMD platform I would look to another manufacturer. As of today, unfortunately, there is not a motherboard manufacturer that has it all figured out for the 790FX chipset. Asus is close but not quite there.

Can someone give me further recommendation for a Mobo? The above 2 candidates apparently can support up to 4 PCI graphics cards (quad crossfire?). I can't decide between the above 2, maybe leaning to the Asus. It's on sale today @Newegg, expires at midnight. Should I get it?

review of above MSI mobo

Pros: Great manufacturer, just behind the times as far as vision, creativity, and catering to the high end enthusiast.

Cons: Very poor layout in regards to the PCI 1x slot and the SATA orientation. Upon further research I learned that the location of the 2 mazarine PCI Express x16 slots (PCI Express Bus SPEC v2.0 compliant; supports CrossFire Technology) conflict with installing a PCI 1x device, for example, a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional. In addition, the SATA orientation is terrible. Upon installing 2 Radeon HD 4870 X2's, the SATA inputs on the motherboard get in the way of the length of the video card PCB. One headache after another!

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, if you are interested in building a high end AMD platform I would look to another manufacturer. As of today, unfortunately, there is not a motherboard manufacturer that has it all figured out for the 790FX chipset. Asus is close but not quite there. For those whom may be interested, this is my current build:
// Silverstone TJ10-B case // Scythe 5.25 Bay Fan Controller // 1-WD Caviar SE16 500GB // 2- WD VelociRaptor (RAID 0) // 2- VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 X2 // Creative SB X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty // PC power & Cooling 1200W // Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR2 1066//MS Vista Ultimate 64 // MSI K9A2 Platinum // AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition // D-Tek Fuzion v2 CPU water block // Danger Den 4870 X2 water block // X-Flow Black Ice Pro II radiator // Danger Den D5 Pump // Tygon Tubing//Danger Den Single 5.25 Bay Reservoir // Blue LED Case fans for aesthetics.
