hi all,

I built a new rig about 2 months ago, it is all going pretty smoothly,
Im running a Q9450 @ 3.2ghz
4 gig ddr2
HIS 4870
asus p5e deluxe
500gig hdd
etc

The system runs well. Crysis (the most demanding game i own) runs at about 35 fps average on 1680 res with all settings high. (it raises to about 45-50 in quiet areas and in extremely demanding areas can dip to 25fps)

The plan was always to buy the 4870 as a stopgap then either add a second 4870 when the price dips or sell it off and get a 4870x2, however i am now debating whether to keep what i have or upgrade

any feedback would be appreciated, lawrie34

An upgrade may not make sense unless there is a BIG jump in performance. I don't see that here. Almost nothing runs Crysis at high fps. For other games, if you can average 60fps, then you don't need more to enjoy good gameplay.

Here is a good article about that:

Since you already have one 4870 you could get a 4870X2 and run 3 way crossfire on that X48 board. As long as you don't set everything to "Very High" that should be more than enough power.

i have a zalman 750w psu, so it is reasonably juicy, would it handle that configuration?

also how effective is coupling two different cards, i realise the 4870x2 is effectively a dual core 4870 but will the be compatable with crossfire and will there be much stutter, etc

i will most likely stick with the standard at the moment, but when prices drop with the next wave i could pick up some of these cards for a steel and im just curious about the compatibility

Dude relax!!! You system kicks a$$. Anyways, Crysis is just one game! Also I read somewhere that the new crysis upgrade is better optimised and will run smoother so don't worry so much.

Seriously, just keep your video card till newer cards come for Christmas. Your 4870 is a beast of a card.

thanks guys, thats kinda what i was thinking also. I might aswell wait untill the first quater next year and upgrade then, im sure the 4870x2 will be obsolete then anyway.

No one runs Crysis maxed out, as it's a poorly programed pig that was rushed out to the masses.
