BY removing the hdd from the pc that wont boot you can add( or slave, depending on connection you have) it to the pc that does and copy the files you want.

Is it sata?
If it is just plug the sata to your pc, if its pata you will need the adapter from laptop to desktop form factor.

the desktop doesn't have sata, I don't have the laptop(the one with the files that won't boot) right now but I believe it is an IBM T40
