I have an 8800 GT 512 GDDR3
and 3 GB of RAM
running windows vista home 32 bit

when system requirments lab scans my computer it says that it register my video card at 1.7 GB is this normal?

i wouldn't worry about it. it's most likely a mistake that the app made when it scanned. as long as windows says its 512MB, then don't worry.

Run GPU-Z and see what it says.

It was probably including the max amount of system ram the video card can draw as shared memory if it ever runs out of onboard. :p

I think Vista does allow the card to share you system memory the same way that say an integrated card would. Does not seem to be detrimental to performance though in my opinion.

My old 3870 512 card "Shared a total of 2300MB of Ram

My new 4870 can use up to 1700MB so Your card is ok.
