I have to believe that this has been well covered already, but I had no luck with searches. So maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
Basically, I'd like to know why my recent upgrade didn't give me the speed increases I was expecting.
Old system:
1.4 Ghz AMD
1 Gig ram
IDE drives
New system:
Intel quad core 2.4 Ghz cpu (Q6600)
BIOSTAR TForce TF7150U-M7 motherboard
OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
I completely reloaded WinXP and all apps onto the new drive.
I do a lot of system-intensive work - video and image conversions. For example, I'll convert a handful of 400 Mb .avi files into a DVD. This used to take about 3 hours. Since the upgrade, it takes a little over 2 hours.
I also create spherical panoramas. I'll convert 90 1-Mb images into a panorama. This used to take 30 minutes. Now it takes 22 minutes.
So I'm seeing an improvement, but nothing like what I was expecting. I'd just like to know where the bottleneck might be and if there's anything that I can do to improve things.
