I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP Home on my Dell laptop with a Dell disk but it's asking for authentification number. I don't have it but I didn't think it would be necessary to just reinstall and take it back to factory settings. Is there a way around this or can I get an autherntification code somewhere. Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi,
Bad news, you will need the key to install Windows.
When you reinstall Windows, it deletes all information about any previous installs and asks for all information again, including languages, time zones, and authentification codes.
Unless you can find the install code, you are stuck.
You may want to look on the PC case side or bottom to see if there is a Windows sticker, or on the case that contains the CDs.
The only other option is to get a new version of Windows and a new code.
Hope this helps,
PD

If it is a Dell laptop and a Dell OS disc... then you shouldn't be getting any request for product keys. At what point are you asked for this? The Dell disc should install without requesting a product key at all... the worst you would get is a request to activate Windows after it is installed.
