Graphics chip maker Nvidia announced that it will reduce its worldwide work force by more than 6 percent. The job cuts come at a time when Nvidia is struggling financially and is facing increased competition in the graphics chip market from the likes of Intel and AMD.

Nvidia announced Sept. 18 that it will cut 360 employees from its worldwide work force as the graphics maker is facing increasing competition from Advanced Micro Devices and Intel.
In a statement, Nvidia announced that it will eliminate about 6.5 percent of its work force by the end of October. The company then plans to take a restructuring charge of between $7 and $10 million related to the cuts when it reports its third-quarter financial results in a few weeks

Nvidia has been struggling as of late financially as well. According to financial Web site Market Watch, Nvidia’s stock has dropped about 65 percent since January. The company also had to take a charge of about $150 million earlier this year to replace faulty graphics chips that it shipped to OEMs
Nvidia in Trouble!
AMD eating Nvidia up!
ATI hardware not faulty like Nvidias!
PS, and that was after the layoffs at ATi prior to that.

That's what happens when you essentially write off your most dangerous competitor, and go on to crap all over your customers with $650 launch prices of your new graphics cards. Their only saving grace is that they've built up so much brand loyalty that they can get away with shenanigans like that, at least a few times.
It all sucks. This isnt good news in any scenario. Anyone that finds this a positive need not reply heheh, cause it aint working. Anyways, Im hoping this isnt a kneejerk reaction by nVidia just to soothe the stockholders, because those are real people behind those numbers folks

And yet thunderman finds it appropriate to post this as trollbait.
I doubt this is a kneejerk reaction though. NVIDIA has some tough times ahead; going head to head with Intel is traditionally a losing man's game. Just ask AMD.
Nvidia is what a multi billion dollar company, how much of a difference can laying off 360 employees really make? Unless of course they are upper level execs. Sure the company got its butt handed to it by ATI this time around and has to fix its faulty chips but unless there is some real screwups in the future it will be back. Can't say in my next build I'll be helping it come back but I really hope that in the next round it makes another 8800GT type of launch. Competiton is good for us all.

To be honest, a 65% drop is pretty steep, but this year has not been kind to most companies' stock price.
Dell's announcement last month about slowing future quarter sales didn't help the tech sector either.

Well, layoffs are bad. I enjoy Nvidia taking a bit of a beat-down, but I don't like layoffs, especially when the problems they're having are execs fault. They knew the chips would be more prone to failure, and they're in control of the direction they go (toward a big bad die = bad idea). However, Nvidia's going to be fine, and next generation we should have some solid competition. I'm especially looking forward to the soon-coming 40nm process shrink by both companies, chips are too hot these days.
