I kind of have no idea about anythign to do with building a new computer, never done it before but confident i could do it if i had compatible parts....that's the thing though...i don't know which parts are compatible or good.

i'm trying to get a decent gaming computer (probably relatively low end) for around 650 or so including operating system not including monitor (although if a monitor could be included in this price i'd be overjoyed)

the only thing i have preference on is a ati 4850 512mb video card and at least 2 gbs of ram (i would prefer 4 so i can use the 64 bit windows vista but it's not necessary)....and ability to upgrade over time as needed (but not to soon).....however really all i'm looking to be able to do is play the rest of the games that are coming this year and the 2009 games on medium or even medium-low graphics (or even low is fine with me) but played smoothly. i can't stand when the game doesn't run smoothly! so if there is a better card then the 4850 that will do that at least what is described above (to your best predictions) put that in.

so basically here is the question, and i feel really bad doing this but i've tried to figure it out by myself for the last 3 months or so and i can't keep up with the changes and stuff, can the community help me design a computer that will do the above (play games up until the end of 2009 running smoothly without being upgraded until after that) for as cheap as possible

thank you, it would mean a lot to me my 2.5 year old laptop is dieing and i won't be able to play spore on it :p

Having to buy a monitor, and the OS (Vista) is going to make your $650 target much more difficult. Vista is sadly overpriced (in my opinion).

As far as the rest of it goes, Tom's hardware did an article where they showed different PC gaming builds at different price points. They had one system they built for under $1,000 I think. You might take a look at that to give you an idea to START with. Then you can taylor it to fit your desires (such as the ATI 4850).

Here's the article in whole:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/system-builder-marathon,1966.html

Here's the portion of the article specifically for the sub-$1,000 PC.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/System-Builder-Marathon,1962.html

Otherwise, anyone trying to answer this thread could easily spend over and hour researching parts and prices for you to give you a suggested build. ;)

Since you're talking about an older laptop, I'm assuming you don't have a desktop now? (so, do you need the CD drives, case, power supply, etc?)

yeah sorry i didn't mean for anyone to waste their time helping little ole me :p, just some suggested parts that might be around the approximate price and i'll find the cheapest price online.
but yeah that's right i don't have anything but a mouse haha, but i don't need a fancy case or a fancy cd drive (just dvd rewritable is fine and those are getitng pretty cheap)
the monitor doesn't really have to fit into the budget of 650...but if it could (or if most of it could and just put me over the 650 a little) it would be unbelievable :).
i will look at the Tom's hardware article now.

jezz good luck with that build...note the HD4850 is a better card compared with the 8800...as for the 9800 I can't say anything about its basically a 8800 with a bigger price tag <_<.. I run in UK £££ and I don't know the conversion rates xD I could give you a rough idea through

here's a quick build check for ya. I took only 5 mins to put together so go over it before buying.

-buy 2gb now and then another 2gb when they have a new rebate. I just did this.

you may still need case, psu, cd roms depending on what you recycle from old comps.

total 468 this included the after rebate price and doesn't include tax, shipping but this should give you an idea on how to go the dirt cheap route.
*better parts usually will cost more

could you tell me about the 9600...i know nothing about it...in comparison to the only two cards i do know 8800 gt and the ati 4850....or in relation to how well it will play games for low long.

one other thing, what if i got a cheaper case with still a over 500+watt power supply....what else matters in a case for example what is wrong with this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121002

i definetly dont' care about looks or anything like that when it comes to the cases....for the cheaper ones is there worse circulation or something would i need a fan...sorry don't quite get that

i appreciate all the suggestions and help
thank you

The 9600GT is quite similar to an 8800GT. Faster in a few situations but mostly just behind the 8800GT in performance.

That case is OK, but the power supply is not. Higher wattage does not mean better. I listed that one because it's the absolute least expensive you can use. You are quite lucky Antec offers that deal still ;)

The Antec EA500W is the absolute minimum I will recommend for that build... it will work for a simple system with a 8800GT or even a 4850, but no more than that.

If you buy the 4850 graphics card, you will definitely need a case with good ventilation.

As Proximon stated, the PSU is the one part that has to be top quality and one that you don't buy because it's cheap. A lower quality PSU can die and take out your other components.
