Hey I am thinking about building a new computer that will last for a while. I don't need anything super high end, but want something that will run fast with no problems and handle most any game I throw at it. Here is what I have so far...
Case - Antec 900
Motherboard - ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W
Video Card - MSI R4850-512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported
Power Supply - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
RAM - CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
HD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
I'm getting all of this off of Newegg except the case, which comes from Amazon. I have a really old setup right now and anything would blow it away in terms of performance. I plan on upgrading the monitor in the future and also the sound card, but they will do for now. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks for looking.
Current total cost about $900.

Looks like you nailed it. The WD 640 is a better deal. Also look at the E8500. It all depends on your usage... I consider the Q9550 to be in a good price range and ideal right now, but maybe it's a bit too high for you.
Consider a Xigmatek s-1283 and bracket for cooling.
To be perfectly honest I would never build myself a machine at this moment, Nehalem is going to cripple everything in a month or two.
If you must build right now, try to get a Q9550 as Proximon suggested.
At very worst in the next month or two processors like Q9550 will drop in price, causing AMD to buckle and drop their prices even more just to compete with low end Intel processors.
I bet well be getting Q9550 for $280 when Nehalem is released, possibly less. Q6600 for $155 …. AMD wont be an option.
hey thanks, that 640 is a way better deal. It also allows me to upgrade to the 9550 you suggested. I don't think I will wait for the Nehalem because even when it comes out it will be ridiculously priced, and I simply don't need it now. Thanks again to everyone. Also, in the future I plan on hooking this up to a large (bigger than 40" ) TV. Will this setup handle it?
