Windows XP does not load

Hello,
Yesterday while working on my laptop it froze. I tried control+Alt+delete and nothing happened so I decided to forced it to switch off (it has occasionally happened before and it was fine). But today when I tried to start the computer, I get the screen with the packard bell logo and then a black screen with an horizontal cursor at the top left corner and nothing else happens. Windows does not load up. What can I do?

Restart the laptop, and tap F8 repeatedly on startup. When you see the advanced boot menu, arrow to 'last known good configuration' and press enter.

It sounds to me like either you file system is damaged you could also have a failing hardrive. Try putting int he windows cd and running a chkdsk from recovery console if that does not help the issue test the hardrive.
