should i upgrade someparts in my gateway to like a hd4950 amd5499be and psu or save up and just build a good gaming pc for $600

You can do both, some parts will be able to be used in your upgrade, and still be moved forward to a new build. The graphic card (HD4850) and power supply (say a Corsair 550w or 650w) can be used to upgrade your system now, and still be used for a good gaming system once you've got the cash to spend on the rest of it. Memory may be usable in both systems depending on motherboard.

Maybe slowly. To be completely honest, you really need 2 gb of memory anymore. 1gb is not bad, but for gaming, it's not enough. I would not go any less than 2gb, but the more memory the better. But depending on the board, start by upgrading psu, then ram, then gfx card. Then you can start saving up for a new pc and carry your upgrades over.
