Window xp screen resolution changes after power off reboot

Running Windows XP, sp3 on Intel PC with NVidia video card. I change the screen resolution from 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 960, and move some desktop icons around so they are not all huddled in what is now the middle of my desktop.

But if I turn power off, when restarting the resolution is back at 1024 x 768.

This doesn't happen just by rebooting, but very consistently happens when turning off the powerstrip that everything is plugged into (which is my nightly practice).

All attempts to google this and search msdn come up with generic instructions on the basics of changing the resolution. It doesnt matter whether I use the Windows interface or the NVidida control panel, the behavior is the same.

Anyone who has any ideas, thanks in advance.
