In my opinion the 4850 is the answer to the 8800gt. prices range from $110-$172 on newegg.com. The 4850 starts around $169 and go up to $220. the 4850 runs 20% (average) faster than the 8800gt(except for on my pc for some reason. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] aster-4850 Overall the 4850 is cheap and fast. But so is the 8800gt.
ATI still hasn't made up its mind on the price of such a card and it will be positioned below Radeon HD 4850 and above HD 4670. It is meant to fight Geforce 9800GT based cards, which are priced slightly above €100.
I'm not sure if this part will be released everywhere or just in certain markets like the HD3690/3830.
My 8800GT is working fine for me, however i am thinking of getting a 4850 or a 4870 though. What resolution do you game at? At 1920x1200 my 8800 does me fine.
my resolution is 1440x900 so my thinking is that a 4850 is just too much card for my needs. was thinking a 4670 or now a 4830 would be much more appropriate and give me the option of crossfire down the line.
Well the card will be primarily for playing WAR and i don't need to have the highest quality settings running to enjoy the game, in fact the graphics for the game aren't that great to begin with honestly. I really just want something that will be able to handle alot of models on the screen.
From what i've garnered the 4850 would be good for that but the problem for me is the price. I understand that you can get some very good deals on the 4850s but typically those cards have very noisy cooling solutions, which is something I want to avoid if i can. Fairly queit models i've heard of are the Powercolor PCS, MSI Quadpipe, and HIS ICEQ. Those cards range from $185-$205 not counting rebates.
Ideally i'd like to find something in the $125ish range, the 8800gt seems to fit the bill, but i'd prefer something that can crossfire as my mobo allows it. I was willing to try a 4670 and see if that would work but now it seems smarter to wait for the 4830 and give that a shot.
Heh, well if you're worried about noisy coolers steer clear of the reference 8800GT. Mine sounds like a banshee on ecstasy when I play demanding games.
If you're not too concerned about antialiasing or even using high settings the 4670 should serve you very well, especially at 1440x900. Heck, you could probably still max out many games and add a little AA with that card.
Running Crossfire on anything less than a 4850 would be silly IMO.
Yah I had a feeling that the 4670 would work and as a bonus it wouldn't require me to upgrade my psu.
Still interested in the 4830 though, hopefully by the time the powercolor 4670 becomes available on newegg there'll be some reviews out there on how the 4830 stacks up.
