i am working on getting my family's internet up to date. So i have gone to the ATT store and upgraded to the Pro package or (3.0 MBPS down). however, my download speeds are the same 300KBPS. i checked the router it says that it is receiving at 3000KBPS or 3.0MBPS. my computer is brand new it has dual gigabit ports so i know that is not the problem. i am pretty sure it is our router. We are using the 2wire 1800hg Gateway we received when we ordered the plan.
Can yall confirm my suspicions or do you think it is something else? any help would be great.
if you do think that it is the router what kind of upgrade would you suggest. we have 3 laptops all B/G/A wireless. And my desktop which for the most part will sit right next to the router.
Download speeds will vary depending on where you are downloading from. You could have 10Gbs internet and still only download at 300KBps.
A 3Mbps line has a theoretical max. download speed of 3,000,000 Bits per sec.
3,000,000 / 8 bits/byte gives you 375000 Bytes/sec or 375KBps.
Figuring in overhead 300 KBps is about right.
Now if you have a 3M BYTE per second line then yes you have a problem if the server you are downloading from is known to go higher.
