Hi

I have used brad G's tweaker and currently I have ncie eye candy and FPS.

However I am experiencing FPS drops to about 40 FPS in intense action.

I have monitored my GPU usage (using RIVA TUNER) during these periods and Have found that my GPU usage % never seems to go above 70%.

This is a problem specific to UT3, I have ran COD4, Advaced Warighter 2 and many other games which regularally reach 100 % gpu usage and hence never drop below 55 FPS.

To clarify no matter what Resolution/Details settings The GPU usage never seems to go about 70% but the FPS consistently drops in high action.

I can post Graphs showing this problem I am experiencing but It will not be until tomorrow as im off to bed.

The card is a Saphire HD4850 dual slot cooling using catalyst 8.9.

Just wondering if anyone has a fix for this, possibly in the config file?

Also to add I have GPU-z And everything is exactly as it should be (clock speeds, PCI-e 16x, ECT)

My CPU is e4300 at 2.4,I wouldnt expect not be able to get a constant 60 even at the lowest resolution and settings.

e4600 even at 2.4, I would still expect the GPU to hit 100% at times, even warhead does that and thats a system eater.

It is your e4300, it only has 2MB cache

UT3 likes more cache, especially in big areas with lots of stuff going on
almost any unreal engine 3 will have the same issues

I had the same problem with an Athlon X2 5000 @ 3.0ghz, it only has 1MB cache or something, i figured it was my x1950 Pro, so i got an HD 3870, but that didnt fix it, only thing it let me do now was play the game at higher resolutions

so then i switched everything to intel and got a C2D e8400, which has 6Mb cache
stock is 3GHZ and at that speed it was running UT3 at 60FPS in all maps including Deck, ShangriLa, and the huge onslaught (warfare, whatever i still call it onslaught) maps with heavy activity going on

Source engine games have a similar reliance on CPU cache; TF2 displayed similar performance drains in big areas with lots of stuff going on with X2

the irony though is that i dont even play UT3 that much anymore

Well thanks for all your help, I will just live witht he drop then as i only just got me hd4850 and dont fancy another upgrade.

Ta.

You should be able to get a good overclock on a E4300 if you want to depending on motherboard support. Its quite an old chip and if you fancy it there should be plenty of info online as far a guides go, or just ask in the overclocking forum. Im sure that somewhere around 3.0ghz is possible.

Yeah I have seen the OCing guides, I woudl do it but my current CPU cooler and PSU just wont be up to it.

Im living with Dips to 40, im just compensating for it.

Cs:S runs exceptionally well over 120 fps constant with everything on full including fsaa.

Plus is thought with my chip being a dual core, I would have two threads?

Can anyone calrify on this, i read the link dagger sent, still confused.

Nehalem brings back ht, makes it 2 threads per core (8 threads for quad, 16 for octo). Current quad/duals are 1 thread per core.
