First of all I'd try to use a . every now and then, cause it gets hard to read your post when it's just one sentence that rambles on and on.
Second I'd try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Don't just reinstall them, uninstall everything that has to do with the video card and put it all back after. Then stick to the Catalyst Control Center if you want to overclock.
------------------------------Core2 Duo E6850 @ 3.6 GHz -- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R -- HIS HD 4870 @ 790/1100 -- 2 GB Corsair XMS2 6400 4-4-4-12 -- Silverstone Zeus 750W -- 900 GB HDDs -- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro -- Acer AL2216W 22" @ 1680x1050
there is absolutely no reason why you should expect it to overclock in the first place, also just use the profile edit to adjust fan speed and control temps.
------------------------------I'm a git, deal with it.
Driver Cleaner is your friend, lol. Also, use ATT to clean up mem/gpu clocks before you remove drivers and all. Even if they don't show up on the screen, use it. Oh, and if you pumped a few more volts on the card, pray to the big G that you didn't fry it
After the reinstall, CCC should be back to normal... If not... Oh well...
If you have or would read some of the reviews on these cards you should conclude that it is not something you buy with overclocking in mind.
Review sites that tried overclocking it got very little gain in frequency that resulted in a negligible increase in performance. The card already uses a lot of power and pushes thermals making it a poor choice for overclocking.
More importantly before you kill your new GPU have you OC'd your Q6600? The 4870x2 scales well with higher CPU clocks. Reading different reviews done on different platforms will prove this out but here is a good link for anyone considering or owning a 4870x2. http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=770
This cpu scaling article shows your processor would improve your FPS by over 10% from default 2.4 to 3.6ghz. You can see real gains playing with your $200 CPU instead of mucking up your $550 graphics card.
