Various reports about the DVD-HD video formats indicate that
some of the audio options include up to 7.1 channels (IIRC,
DTS++).

If 7.1 channel sound becomes the norm for DVD-HD video, will
ATSC and DVB DTV/HDTV also add an audio option for 7.1
channel sound?

Having got to 5.1 the hi-fi industry needed an excuse for you to upgrade
your kit and buy more speakers... so they invented 7.1.

It is true that in a cinema there are loads more speakers, but this is more
to do with having fairly even sound levels in what is quite a large (and
when full well padded) room than improving the quality of the sound field.

IIRC for DD the extra channels are matrixed into a standard 5.1 bitstream and
simply flagged as such, so they could already be broadcasting 7.1 today without
them being aware of it. Whether they will take to producing series in 7.1 is
another matter, aside from software and licencing it doesn't really add to the
complexity, they're just 'filler' channels.

Of course we're all asking where does it go from here? ;)

Dolby Labs has a special Dolby Surround encoder for their
Dolby Pro-Logic II 5 channel decoder, but I couldn't find
any mention of an encoder specifically for the Dolby
Pro-Logic IIx 7 channel decoder.

Circle Surround II only offers up to 6 channels.

I think what you're looking for is Dolby Digital EX, this is backward compatable
with normal DD5.1 :-
http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/dolby_ex.html

Of course Pro-Logic was about extracting surround from a standard 2-channel
stereo matrix, but Pro-Logic IIx is meant to mirciously create a 6.1 or 7.1
output from any source including a standard 5.1 bitstream, but that's something
for your amp to mangle the sound with ;)

If you're a broadcaster/studio looking to produce a 7.1 track you use Dolby
Digital EX which uses 5.1 plus a matrix for the extra channels, I don't think
you can specifically encode for Pro-Logic IIx 7.1 since that's what the former
is intended for?

"Dolby Pro Logic IIx is an extension of Dolby Pro Logic II
technology. This highly sophisticated algorithm processes
native stereo- and 5.1-channel material to produce 6.1 or
7.1 output channels."

What about DPL IIx processing DD 5.1 EX, that would be 8.1
channel sound (3 speakers across the front, 1 each on the
left and right sides and 3 across the back) ;)

True. They'll sell us anything we'll buy. My sainted mother once told me
about the
public reaction to the introduction of cake mix. It was greeted with
skepticism
as being totally unnecessary. See how things change.

Oh yes, just add an egg, milk etc. - contents of sachet flour and sugar!
