Having got to 5.1 the hi-fi industry needed an excuse for you to upgrade
your kit and buy more speakers... so they invented 7.1.

It is true that in a cinema there are loads more speakers, but this is more
to do with having fairly even sound levels in what is quite a large (and
when full well padded) room than improving the quality of the sound field.

Dolby Labs has a special Dolby Surround encoder for their
Dolby Pro-Logic II 5 channel decoder, but I couldn't find
any mention of an encoder specifically for the Dolby
Pro-Logic IIx 7 channel decoder.

Circle Surround II only offers up to 6 channels.

What about DPL IIx processing DD 5.1 EX, that would be 8.1
channel sound (3 speakers across the front, 1 each on the
left and right sides and 3 across the back)
