Drivers for gateway laptop

a friend bought an empty harddrive for her gateway laptop, she had to install OS, XP Pro - but now she wants me to install all the drivers and does not have a drver installation cd. Any suggestions - i trid connecting laptop to internet by way of crossover cable thru router, (but my knowledge of doing so not sure if there are configurations that have to be done) to see if i can download from internet directly - but keep getting "ethernet driver not installed - please install ethernet driver then reconnect to internet"
any suggestions?

go to the gateway website and download the driver for the NIC by using the laptop model number

Yes that is the exact same model laptop

download and install the LAN drivers, and then run windows updates for each missing driver
