I have been annoyed recently with my consumer-grade router experience. For the past 8 or so years, I would get a new router, and after about 2 years it would flake out. This has continued repeating over and over. I just cant seem to find a router that will last longer than 2 years.
I figure my problem is that I'm buying consumer grade hardware (~$50 each time), and that getting 2 years out of one of those pieces is typical. Thus, I have been looking into more expensive, small business solutions. I've been eyeing some cisco routers, but I wanted to ask here to find out your opinions.
Criteria:
-Should be a router (though if it is ultimately not going to last, I could set up a gateway myself. In this case, a good recommend for a switch would be nice)
-Bonus points if its gigabit
-Bonus points if its wireless
Hi i was in your situation a week ago but now i got a Cisco ASA 5505 and its the best one i have ever bought!
The perfomance of this is beound comparison with those consumer grade crap i had before (dlink, netgear, linksys, belkin and last but not least apple)
Got it coupled to my TimeCapsule that i now configured to be just an access point with WiFi and gigabit switch.
Now if i coud only figure out how to make port forward in this advanced piece of hardware..
I need to learn how to use the cli because the web config is so rich with features compared to all others.
