So I WAS running

8800gts
amd athlon 4600 x2
3gb ddr2 ram
mobo- asus m2npv vm

I got an open box 6400+ windsor core. I verified that its compatible with my mobo.

PSU is 500w btw.

Installed new processor, had to flash bios to be compatible with new processor.

All was fine, then a little later when the PC has to work has it would cut off (usually after 15 mins). I mean straight away, not shut down.

Noticed I had too much thermal paste in there (arctic silver 5). Cleaned it up and put a sensible amount in.

Now PC doesnt even power up. Mobo light is green. When I press the power button, I get all the appropriate lights (fans etc to come on but only for an INSTANT). Won't boot up.

Is there a short somewhere? Busted PSU?

also, I am using the heatsink, fan from the 4600. Is this the problem? did it burn out?

PS - tried putting in the old processor and still cant start up.

ANY IDEAS? Thanks

Well the heatsink for the 4600 is worse, so it could well be an overheating issue. I got an Arctic Cooling (AC-FRZ-64P) Freezer64 Pro that was cheap and very effective on my 6000 so you could give that a go. Of course there's a chance that it was defective which was why it was open box and hadn't been properly tested etc. Sometimes this stuff just happens, i'd say take it somewhere where they can test it properly.

I doubt its the processor right now, since if I put the old one in it still wont boot. A flash of lights for an instant, but nothing ....

Sounds like it could be your power supply. If the PSU has a switch on the back try cutting it off and waiting about 5 minutes cutting it back on then powering back up. My system showed simliar symptoms once when my PSU was failing. It would cut off instantly then refuse to power back up until the PSU cooled down and was reset since it went into a thermal protection mode. If not your PSU then its sounding like it could be the motherboard but hopefully its the PSU since this is an easier replacement.

hmm, just called my wife got her to try to power it on before she goes in to work.

after flicking the power switch, power will flick on for an instant (all the LEDS flash momentarily) but no further.

I'm gonna get a new heatsink and better PSU on my way home and see how it goes.

Does nobody here think I burned out the heatsink fan?

It was suggested to me that the mobo is getting power but has tripped to a safety mode because of the power cuts.

Im gonna try clearing the cmos when I get home and see if I can boot back up.
