Make sure the board has the bios or later & is one of the revisions in order to support that cpu.

  • Any budget?
  • For what use?
  • Why this board specifically?
  • Need the MicroATX form factor?
  • Need the on-board GPU?

To be honest, I don't know much about Intel manufactured board and I think most people on this forum don't use them; Asus, Gigabyte and others all make very good boards using the Intel chipsets.

What games do you play, need a monitor or planning to keep the one you have (if so what is it so we can have the resolution)?

you shouldn't only look at intel-branded motherboards. there are other companies that make equally good or better boards. Gigabyte and ASUS are both excellent.

I agree, Newegg is one of the best places to perform research on parts. Lots of reviews, and lots of info about each product.

By the way Would you say the G45 chipset is good?

Reply to Jono T

G45 chipset feature integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator. Frankly these are weak and not up to the duty of gaming. These are designed for web browsing, office computers to display pie charts and video streams. If your going to purchase a GPU then buying this chipset makes no sense (like buying bicycle pedals for your car).

If you can wait a couple months the X58 chipset will be coming out soon!......when? ........ soon! along with thier X25-m SSD's........when? .......soon! and the i7 CPU's .....When??........ soooooon!........but.....but ......I want it now!

Ok forget all that Nehalem business, if your dead set on getting an intel board and have no budget then Skulltrail is what your looking for.

It literally leaves a trail down your skull making you wondering where your your brain ran off to? Sporting 2 775 sockets this bad boy can have 8 cores of gianormous CPU Powa! Having both SLI and Crossfire configurations means that you can have the best GPUs at all times. This is the as futureproof as we can get today..........but then there's Nehalem just around the corner........when...........Soon.

i'll just throw this out there, that's most likely way too expensive and extremely unnecessary for the OP.

My sister works at PC world, so i went up there with her found a nice mother board but she forgot to write down it's name!!!!

Reply to Jono T

ok here's it's name (or atleast what she wrote down):
558072 Gigabyte EP35C - DS3R

Any good?

Reply to Jono T

The EP35C-DS3R, as opposed to the EP35-DS3R, adds DDR3 support and I heard many people complaining about stability/performance on DDR2/DDR3 boards. But if you can get your hands on a regular EP35-DS3R, it's a good board. The EP45-DS3L is also a good board, but with the more recent P45 chipset. None of the mentioned board support CrossFire or SLI, but for those of us that don't want it, the Gigabytes boards have been great buys.

Reply to Jono T

Personally I would go either for a Gigabyte EP35-DS3L (if budget is tight) or Asus P5Q (Standard or Pro).

price doesn't matter, what processer/ chipset does the Asus P5Q support?

Reply to Jono T

It has the P45 chipset and supports pretty much every C2D and C2Q processor currently available, some require BIOS flash to work (like the Q9650 that was released less than a month ago).

By the way, whats the differnts between quad core and extreme?

Reply to Jono T

Extremes are Intel CPUs with unlocked multiplier; they cost about twice as much as the "locked" versions, check the QX9650 vs the Q9650 ....

sorry to be a pain but, what would you say the best processer for the Asus P5Q?

Reply to Jono T

ok, hows this for ram BL2KIT25664AA80A?
and is the Asus P5Q an ATX motherboard?
and finally do you think its ok to go for the Q9650 processer

Reply to Jono T

Crucial Ballistix (BL2KIT25664AA80A) is good RAM, I'm sure you can't go wrong with it. Just make sure you don't buy it directly from Crucial, you will pay way more (~125$ on crucial.com and ~71$ after MIR on NewEgg.

All the P5Q line of motherboard is ATX yes.

I don't think the Q9650's ~170MHz over the Q9550 could any way be worth the 225$ more it costs. If on the long run you really want the Q9650, then get the Q6600 now and get the Q9650 when the price drops ...

so you's reccommend the Q9550 or the Q6600

Reply to Jono T

IMO it's mostly a budget thing, the Q6600 is probably the best "bang-for-the-buck", but the Q9550 is better (but costs twice as much). If you have the budget and/or don't want to overclock, get the Q9550, otherwise you will still be very happy with Q6600.

Reply to Jono T

I'm not an expert in cases (I used the same old Xacer III V2000A for 4-5 years), you might want to start a second thread for that.

Found a couple of reviews and it seems like a good case, however, it comes only with the side fan (might be enough since it's a 360mm). Personally I prefer roomier cases and I would add the missing fans which would ramp-up the price to the point where you might want to just get an Antec 900.

Reply to Jono T

I have never heard of that case or even that case company. Searched a bit (I always do) and found this review. Seems like a decent case for the price, but the paint might chip easily.

16 1/2 inches down or 11cm again roughly

Reply to Jono T

Sorry about not knowing what you meant, english isn't my strong point...
any way, id like to be able to upgrade the hard disk drive. as many usb slots as possible, atleast 4 at the back and 2 at the front. i think thats all.
Sorry again about not knowing what you meant.

Reply to Jono T

By criteria I mean overall qualities you might be looking for (functional or aesthetic). For example, do you want side windows to see inside your PC, do you want a casing with really good airflow to keep the parts as cool as possible, how silent do you expect it to be (not that much of an issue now that video card make more noise than anything else). Just things like that.

There are tons of cases available and many of them are good and prices vary. Personally, if I was to change my casing, I might go for an Antec 900, but not everyone wants to spend 130$ on a casing. Other than that, for people that don't need a too bug PSU, I recommend the Antec Sonata III, still 130$, but with a good 500W PSU (EarthWatt).

i don't mined what it costs that much
no idea what you mean, sorry im still quite new to this so i don't understand a few things still

Reply to Jono T

If you don't mind the cost that much, take a look at the Antec 900 photos on NewEgg and tell me what you like and what you don't, we can adjust the aim from there.

With that set up and the fact that you dont mind the cost, i would go 4 a hd4870 or a 260gtx, there are many reviews you can look at to help you decide.

And unless you want lots of speed i would go for a basic hdd

Reply to coleman

the antec 900 looks pretty good but i have 2 complaits with it
-i can't have usb on top as i hav a shelf above where my tower is
- it only has 2 drive bays, where as i would like 3for possible hdd expasion in the future.

hd 4870 but i open for opinion about this, oh and i would quite like lots of speed

Reply to Jono T

How high is that shelf to make sure the tower actually fits in there?

BTW, for HDD you use internal bays and the Antec 900 has 6, so more than enough ;).
