new machine views, info on new laptop vs old desktop

I currently have:

althon 64 3200
1gb ddr
320gb 7200 16mb wd
120gb max 7200
19" phillips
15" nec

Im a designer, but only in flash and photoshop, my current machine has served me well even though its pretty ancient (its not the tools that make the work:). But im relocating to get a job and its awkward as I have no laptop at the other house, well I do but its my partners slow one. Im thinking of getting a laptop and maybe using my monitor too when I fully move, but at the moment Im between two places...

So ive been pondering buying a laptop or a barebones, the barebones i think are expensive and id rather just keep my current pc and move that about, but I was wondering how fast a budget laptop is compared to my current system? I only have £400 for a laptop if its worth getting and Id like a 17" one, so that means usually a core duo not core 2. At the same time is it worth getting if its worse than my desktop? I can always get external drives to make up space. On the other hand I might not use it if I get a job soon, so I dont want to spend too much?

General laptops I can get:

toshiba, core duo 1.7ghz, 1gb, 120gb hd (prolly 5200rpm) 17"

Acer Aspire 7520 AMD Turion TK57 1024MB 80GB DVD-SM 17\" ACB TFT Windows Vista Premium £299

Acer Extensa 7620Z-5A2G16Mi./ Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370 Processor 1GB 80GB 17" DVD±RW Vista Home Premium £365

Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-14P T2370 1.7 1GB 120GB 17 WXGA Trubrite GL960 DVD-SMDL 11b g 1.3mp Cam Vista £369

Toshiba Equium L350-10L - Pentium Dual Core T2370 / 1.73 GHz - RAM 2GB - HDD 120GB - 17\" - DVD?RW (?R DL) / DVD-RAM - GMA X3100 Dynamic Video Memory £379

Acer Aspire 7720 Santa Rosa T5450 2048MB 120GB DVD-SM 17\" ACB Windows Vista Premium £400

So these are the general things, for 17" anyway...

So Im wondering would these laptops work faster than my current desktop or at similar speed?

Or are they not worth getting and should I just cart around my desktop?
