Hello,
I downloaded the hotfix with microsoft agent and it still says I've timed out when I use outlook xp on system 7. Should I just not use it or is there a way to fix it?

  1. What is the exact error message?

Outlook XP (and the rest of Office XP) is pretty outdated by now. I suggest you move to a newer version of Office if possible.
  2. In theory, you can download and install Win7's XP Compatibility Mode and run under that: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
That said, a newer version of Outlook would be a sound investment. Alternatively, you could look into free open-source mail clients.
  3. Did you double-check your email settings? Is the time out message coming up when you try to connect? Could just be that your email setup was wrong.
  4. I just read this possibly-relevant bit of information: "Outlook Express is no longer supported and has been removed from Windows entirely. Microsoft's free email client is now known as Windows Live Mail, and must be downloaded separately. Outlook Express is not supported and will not work under Windows 7."

It's in this post: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/7686-63-common-questions-windows-version , point number 19. I know that you had full Outlook, not Express, but this is as close as I can get.

Office XP is also not supported under Windows 7, but it may work anyway. The error the OP is getting does not sound as much of a application not working right issue as the email settings are not configured properly, and it's just timing out either getting to or authenticating to the server.

If those settings are checked however, then it may be an issue with the application and Win 7.
