I do fair amount of video encoding and I am surprised to see that on your Q3 2008 Xvid cpu charts you have the Q6600 so close to the E6600. Do you not understand how to run multiple encoding instances? I have several E6600's and Q6600's systems and the Q6600 are very close to twice the encode speed of the E6600.

It is 2008 do you still not understand multi threading? I mean I understood your lack of knowledge a little when the Prestonia Xeons first came out in like 2001ish but damn 7 years later and still?

Well I am glad somebody noticed that, now what were you rambling about again? Oh yeah, I think the price of eggs in China is going to decline over the next 90 days.

Do you know running multiple instances is not multi-threading?

I'm sure you would see quite a difference if running multiple instances of lots of things on a Quad that are not revealed.

But since this is your first post and clearly have not been around much, I'm sure you will pick that stuff up over time....

Lol, you do not need to run multiple instances. That chart is old. Who use original Divx/Xvid for anything those days? Use ffdshow for Xvid encoding and you'll get the desired results.

Agreed, do you think having 4 instances on the xvid charts would show a fair picture of how well threaded the app is, or would you just like to see big distorted numbers?

The whole point of the cpu charts are to give people a fair idea of how well a particular app performs with a particular cpu, by comparing the same ghz dual and quad family you can work out for yourself the gains to be had running multiple instances.

So if I drive 2 cars, I can carry twice as many people? No freaking way! It's a shame I only have two hands, those quad-handed people have a serious advantage.

The difference between multithreading and running multiple instances:

If making a baby were a multithreaded process, then 5 women could produce 1 baby in 2 months.

If it still takes you an hour to encode that video because you don't have a second video to pair with it, then the E6600 gets the job done as fast as the Q6600.

they know dude we have these discussiions for years

in fact after 3200 posts i joined here just to debate that no realy multitasking testing was doen when the athlon was do called king

i just worked on pentium 3.0 i built closed to 3.4 for business - it is still pretty fast!

we know - and if you study posts on quads everyone say that video encoding is one thing that is almost double - one of the few that can use more then 2 cores

I would say the OP doesn't know the difference from multi-threading to mutli-processing.

SMT existed well before 2001.

At first I was like WTF is SMT ... Does it stand for smurf mountain? Is it smoother than SMP?

Then I was like yeah SMT cool.... folding@home would prolly mean a dude jerkin off without it.

If someone was fistfkn I'd prolly figure each finger and thumb not baby manufacturing potential.

Actually, there is clear, photographic and (especially!) video evidence - freely available on the internet - that making a baby takes one woman, various manually and battery operated "appliances", 4~10 guys of various enthnic background, and that the courtship ritual involves a pizza delivery, a cheesy 1970's soundtrack, and a couple guys in rubber diapers beating each other over the head with ball peen hammers while taking turns bl*wing the cat.

...and midgets.... don't forget the midgets! :pt1cable:

...and besides: Think about how good the cat feels!

Yea but your post doesn't show much "intelligence" since you stated THG doesn't understand multithreading and you start talking about multi instance. There is and always will be a difference.

Unless the app can actually do one instance and use more than 2 cores, a equally clocked dual core will be at the same performance levels UNLESS the quad has better IPC.

Want to understand multithreading? Play L4D. Do it with a dual core than a quad you will see a 80% better performance increase. Thats multithreading.

I think one would learn more about multithreading encoding video than playing a game...... All of the decent encoding apps I have used in the past 8 years have been multithreaded.
