I don't know that much about computer hardware, but from what I read it said I just need a socket 775 mobo for quad to work (which I have; Asus P5LD2-VM LGA775).

I turned on my computer and the fans went on. The monitor said no device was connected. I couldn't turn the computer off from the front, I had to turn it off from the back.

What went wrong?

That sucks.

Oh, I only used the thermal paste that was automatically put on the stock cooler. Did they expect me to put more on the CPU?

Maybe I fried this bitch as well.

nah, you didn't hurt it i would bet.i doubt it even warmed it up. i would go ahead and get a motherboard man. you already got a nice cpu! :)
