k, this just sounds weird. according to amd's website, you can use any 2 38x0 cards together for cf, e.g. 3870, 3870X2, or 3850.

however, you have to match the model numbers for the 4800 series.

seems weird to have only one of these to be true. both should be the same, imho.

I don't see any limitations according to ATI's website. Their compatibility chart at the below link from ATI's website lists 4850's and 4870s compatible.
