I bought a Zire 72 last week and a new 512k SD memory card, because my
Zire 71 got ran over by a car and was destroyed along with an old SD
card. The Zire 72 wasn't reading the new SD card, so I took the card
back to the store. I tried four other cards, none of them worked. So,
I took the Zire 72 back to the store, a different store, over an hour
from where I live.
The store clerk merely reset the Zire 72 and it was able to read the
card. Then, I took it home and recharged it overnight. The next day I
went to use it and it wasn't reading the SD card again! So, I pushed
the reset switch, thinking that would work again, like it had for the
store clerk. It didn't.
Now I'm wondering what if I reset it wrong. Does it have to be on or
off? Does the card have to be in or out of the slot? I think I tried
all combinations, but I'm not sure. Also, I'm wondering if anyone else
had this problem and what I should do?

That has never mattered with my Z72 when it was reset.

No problems at all with mine and I have several cards of different sizes.

Last resort: try a *hard* reset. Hold down the power button and push the reset
button. Keep holding the power button for several seconds until the logo
appears. This should put it back in factory fresh condition. But hot sync and
back up your stuff as this will wipe the memory. And leave the card out during
this process. Why? Dunno, for sure but why take a chance. My Z72 is 9 months old
and I've never had to resort to the hard reset (yet) so the model is normally
very stable. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

This is a known problem updating from Z71 to Z72. If you remember, Z71
used a patch in order to read SD cards of 128M. You have probably
installed this patch in your older Z71. Now, if you just hot-synch your
new Z72 with your computer without make any changes, your old backup
files, including the patch, made their way on the new Z72. But the patch
is incopatible with Z72. An easy solution is to reset the Z72, find the
patch in the backup directory and delete it, then hot-synch again.

I hope you didn't delete any vital information too.
