What does the DDR2 and DDR3 and DDR4 in graphics card stand for in the graphics card? Is it like a 512MB DDR3 memory as fast or even faster as a 1GB DDR2 memory in graphics card? How bout DDR4 and DDR5? What kinda graphics card are worth getting now, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5? Thanks! =)

NEVER GET DDR2!!!
EVER!!!
Seriously, its a waste of time and just marketing hype.
DDR4 is meh. slightly faster but nothing ground breaking. DDR5 is looking pretty good.
GDDR3 is the standard nowadays.

hope this helps.

also, 512mb of ram is plenty for todays games. You really only need more in games like Crysis at 1600x1200 and above.

GDDR2 is garbage. Stay away from cards with it, make sure you look carefully. GDDR3 is the standard, but ATI now uses GDDR5 which is far superior, but only on the 4870's.

I agree with the above. Although for a PC main memory i would suggest the 1GB DDR2, for video memory it is the opposite. DDR3 any day over DDR2!

Well, GDDR3 has a slightly higher latency but can provide for much better speed, and thus bandwidth, in comparison to GDDR2. GDDR4 is not much better than GDDR3, but you may notice if you're looking at the 3870s some of them will have GDDR3 with slower RAM speeds. GDDR5 doubles the amount of data that can be sent compared to previous GDDR iterations.

Don't forogt the high latency with GDDR5 though. In terms of throughput, GDDR3 and GDDR5 are about equal.

Then why can the GDDR5 on the 4870 easily match the GTX 260 and nearly match the 280 for bandwidth, despite a massively smaller bus?

Oh, and the latency is no higher for DDR5 than for DDR3.
