Well I think I have finally decided on going the building route rather than just pick up something from Dell. Now I am at a loss on what would be the best build for me, which is why I've got this great community to help me out.
Little background on what I need and my budget. First, this computer will be used heavily for Excel/Powerpoint, along with the usual surfing the net/downloading movies. I do plan on playing World of Warcraft, and Warhammer. That is the extent of my gaming with the computer, since I usually play most games on ps3/xbox360.
Computer will not be used for movie watching, usually watch all movies on my 50' plasma, although I would prefer it have a tv tuner so I can watch my usual sports while I'm doing work, or if wife has control of the tv lol.
I do have a another smaller 32' plasma Samsung LN- T3253H, which I'm not sure if I can make as my monitor...would be pretty sweet though lol...but I might go blind soon after.
Budget is something that I am open minded on, since I really don't plan on going all out gaming with this rig or doing any fancy OC, i would say 1k is a decent budget. Like I said, I am open minded about this, and would not be a big deal if its over that amount.
Do you think it would be better to just get a Dell or HP desktop with a monitor...found some pretty good deals, and just wondering for my current needs if it would be more appropriate.

Thanks
You can get a pre-built computer. Building a computer is not difficult and there is a lot of satisfaction in doing it, if you care to.
You will get better hardware for the money.

I'm going to suggest a potentially unusual alternative, just for the sake of being cheap.
Rosewill R220-P-BK Black 0.5mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail Model #:R220-P-BK Item #:N82E16811147074
$29.99 -$5.00 Instant $24.99
Entirely reasonable minimalist case. Not tool-free, but roomy inside. Most edges are rolled. Comes with a rear 120mm fan and will take another up front. The rear fan can be unclipped for cleaning.
Has HDMI output, plus DVI and analog VGA. May be sufficient as it is for WoW. If not, spend another $100 (max) on a HD3850; that's fine for your stated needs.
Antec Basiq BP500UB 500W ATX12V Version 2.01 Active PFC Power Supply - OEM Model #:BP500UB Item #:N82E16817371019
$39.99 $39.99
Hard to beat this price on a decent PSU.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADO5000DOBOX - Retail Model #:ADO5000DOBOX Item #:N82E16819103211
$66.00 $66.00
Will have no trouble meeting your needs.
A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model ADQVE1A16K - Retail Model #:ADQVE1A16K Item #:N82E16820211066
$37.99 $37.99
Nothing remarkable, but runs at the JEDEC standard 1.8V.
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM Model #:ST3250410AS Item #:N82E16822148262
$59.99 $59.99
There are better bang-for-buck drives, but I was remaining with a cheap mindset. Easy enough to change, for example for the 640GB Western Digital.
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model iHAS120-08 - Retail Model #:iHAS120-08 Item #:N82E16827106264
$28.99 $28.99
I have had no trouble out of Lite-On drives. If you want it, they have a Lightscribe model for a few bucks more. As a Retail version, it will include the software, including a decoder which you'll need to watch movies.
Subtotal: $357.94
No O/S, no tuner, and you may want that HD3850, but this gives you the option of letting your wife share the hobby budget.

I was checking out Warhammer just the other day. Sadly, I probably won't get it unless their subscription is MAX $5 per month (about the same as buying a magazine). They only list a 128MB (or was it 64MB??!) on their system requirements.
