might be building a new computer for a friend of a friend. Will be used for mild gaming and general internet usage. No plans to overclock. also i would expect they will have this pc for a while witch is why i went with a faster proc.

the parts I am looking at:
Rosewill R6422-P BK Black SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Rosewill RFA-120-BL 120mm 4 Blue LEDs LED Case Fan
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
SAPPHIRE 100226L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

All the parts are from New Egg.
the biggest question i have is with the memery. from the reseach i have done the memory will work fine but since i have limited experience with the intel setups i figured it doesn't hurt to ask.
was planning on using XP pro for the OS. was not planning on getting a aftermarket heatsink for the Proc since it does come with one. Do you believe the boxed intel heatsink will be fine for this build?

Swap out the memory for DDR2-800 that will run at the JEDEC standard 1.8V.
Thermaltake isn't a great PSU, but not a bad one. It should be sufficient for that build.
Depending on the budget, you could readily drop down to an e7200.
Depending on his internet habits, a 160GB drive could be small. 320GB to 500GB is probably a better deal for him.

boxed heatsink will be fine. don't waste money on 1066 memory, get 800. dont buy thermal compound, use the crap on the factory heatsink.

I question the 3850 gfx card, unless prices have dropped below $100.

I wouldn't waste money on a faster CPU. a better graphics card would give the system a longer lifespan, and upgrading either is fairly comperable in dificulty.

In all honesty, this looks like a good case for AMD with thier supior on-board-graphics. then let them buy a card when needed.

the 3850 was on newegg for 100 but there was a MIR for $15
i picked the e8400 since its not that expensive of a proc but it SHE does not want to spend that i will keep that in mind to go down to the e7200.
its good to know DDR2 800 will work i was not sure it it would.

Here's a better graphic card then the 3850 at $90 after rebate. the Asus 8800GT with aftermarket fan

If you want to stay with ATI then this 3870 at $100 after rebate

This RAM for $37.50 after rebate DDR2 800 1.8v Mushkin

Cleeve doesn't include rebates in his price recommendations and he's late with his Sept. list....at his age he's probably napping

I agree with Dirtmountain on most of his points, particularly the last one. I could probably use a nap too.
I've read a lot of complaints about how Asus handles rebates. I HATE the rebate game.
Two reasons I didn't get an 8800 were noise and heat, although the aftermarket cooler on that one should help with both. The Asus EAH3850 I have uses a similar cooler, and it is pretty quiet. My next GPU I've decided will have an aftermarket cooler or will exhaust its heat from the case.
RAM that operates at the JEDEC standard voltage (1.8V for DDR2) is a carved-in-stone requirement on any system I build.

new setup

Rosewill R6422-P BK Black SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Rosewill RFA-120-BL 120mm 4 Blue LEDs LED Case Fan
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
SAPPHIRE 100226L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply
mushkin 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775(may go to e7200, if she can't afford this setup)

thanks for the advice all!

The Rosewill case and fans will cost you $25+$17 shipping + 4 * ($5+$7 shipping) for a total of $90. Get a RC-690 (with 3 fans in it already) for $77 here:
http://www.buy.com/prod/cooler-master-690-without-power-supply/q/loc/101/206177908.html

The 160GB HDD costs $52. Get a faster HDD with 4 times the space for $85 instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218&Tpk=WD6400AAKS

The HD 3850 costs $85. For $153 you can have a much better HD 4850 with a free game. If this is a gaming machine, this is the most important change to make. Do it even if you have to downgrade the CPU to E7200.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121253

If it's not a gaming machine, then keep the E8400 and downgrade the video to HD 3650.

Edit: oops, I misunderstood, the "Rosewill RFA-120-BL 120mm 4 Blue LEDs LED Case Fan - Retail" is just one fan, not 4 fans. OK, case+fan would cost you 25+17+5+7=$54. I'd still recommend the RC-690 for $77, if you get the HD 4850. If you get the HD 3650, the Rosewill case is fine.

The build looks good. Since I assume your friend will be most concerned with it's internet and office performance I'm sure she'll love the E8400. The Radeon 3850 is fine for mild gaming like World of Warcraft or Hell Gate London. As long as she doesn't want to run Crysis on Very High it'll do fine.

If you're not planning to overclock I don't see the point in using Antec Silver 5. It's great stuff, but I don't think your friend will get much of an appreciable benefit out of it so I'd only recommend you get it if you are going to keep the rest of it for yourself ^_^. As for the RAM you're better off going with some DDR2 800, but I see that your particular choice in Ram is only a few bucks more than some decent DDR2 800 RAM.

That 1066 RAM does not operate at standard DDR2 voltage so if you want something that's easier to work with get some DDR2 800 Ram. I'd recommend the Mushkin ^_^
